Job Candidates Three Ways to Stand Out Without Gimmicks Job Candidates Three Ways to Stand Out Without Gimmicks A recent Wall Street Journal article confirmed what you and I already knew: job application gimmicks rarely work. Then why do some of you keep trying them? Because you don’t know what else to do in such a competitive job market. So the unemployment numbers are creeping down. Whoopie! So what? For you, there are still hundreds of applicants per job posting, you have no indication from companies how you’re faring, and it’s hard to break out of the black hole of Human Resources. Clearly, you do need to stand out; but trying too hard to be cute isn’t going to do it. Rather than regaling you with more stories about how candidates are trying to use gimmicks, I’d like to get right to a few recommendations. Spoiler alert: you will say, “These are so basic.” If they are so basic, why do I need to say it again? Because you’re not doing them! 1. Always do a cover letter. And stop using “I” in that cover letter, too! I recently or additional ideas!
